Zakiya is a registered nurse, currently living in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. Zakiya has always lived an active lifestyle, playing soccer for 9 years as a young girl, but it wasn’t until her early 20s that she became a self-proclaimed health and wellness junkie. It was then that she began educating herself about nutrition and exercise, quickly realizing that it was, and still is, one of her greatest passions. Eventually this led to Zakiya creating her health and wellness blog “Zakiya’s Kitchen.” In late 2015, Zakiya was unfortunately in a car accident that left her with soft tissue injuries to her neck, shoulders, and back. She has had many ups and downs since then, fighting through recovery to be able to continue her fitness journey. Nonetheless, Zakiya persevered through rehabilitation countless times, consistently using her passion for fitness and nutrition to help her stay strong through the whole journey, stating that “it hasn’t been easy, but its been so rewarding to see how resilient and strong my body is.”
Favourite Way to Sweat
Zakiya’s favourite workout involves a mix of resistance training and high intensity interval training. Her ideal training session is 30-45 minutes of weight lifting, following by 10-15 minutes of incline treadmill sprints.
Favourite Way to Recover Post-Workout
Zakiya recovers post-workout with lots of water and either a big bowl of protein oats or a protein shake. She prefers to consume her post-workout meal while watching Netflix in her pajamas.
Zakiya considers her greatest accomplishment to be a tie between graduating from nursing school and cultivating a healthy lifestyle and fitness routine that she truly enjoys and finds sustainable.
Living Your Best Life
To Zakiya, living your best life is waking up each day feeling energized, healthy, and strong. This means being consistent with workouts that she truly enjoys, eating lots of nutritious and delicious food, getting enough sleep and rest, and maintaining balance so that she can enjoy all the wonderful things and experiences that life has to offer.
